Director of Emergency Preparedness
Recently retired from her full-time position as Director of Emergency Services at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo Michigan after 38 years, Carrie currently serves as the Director of Emergency Preparedness for Compliance One Group.
In Carrie’s previous position, one of her many responsibilities included 24-hour oversight of a Level One Trauma center with an annual census of 98,000 visits, a 20-bed admission unit, and a 24/7 Admission Transfer Center. She also directed the Emergency Preparedness programs for the hospital system. Further duties included: quarterly training/drills for all hospital staff, development of disaster manuals, ensuring Joint Commission Requirement guidelines were met, establishment of an Incident Command Training Program, and development of department specific emergency plans for all units within the hospital. Carrie was also responsible for managing the Contagious Disease Team that was developed in response to the Ebola Outbreak, which included developing guidelines, algorithms, and annual drills for all areas.
Carrie has also worked with the State of Michigan in developing programs and processes specific to healthcare coalitions and deployment of a state provided resource of MI-TESA (portable 100 bed hospital). She continues to be active in the local 5th district hospital coalition for Southwest Michigan. She also serves as the Emergency Preparedness consultant for Bronson Healthcare Group, where she continues to be responsible for reviewing and developing emergency preparedness plans for the overall system, which includes three hospitals.
As a subject matter expert/contracted instructor for the Center of Domestic Preparedness for the past 14 years, Carrie enjoys teaching health care leadership disaster tactics to leaders across the United States.

Director of Business Development Safety & Security Expert
Joe is retired from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, the largest Public Safety Department in the nation. Having served his last 16 years as a supervisor. During the last five years of his tenure, Joe led the Community Policing Division which was comprised of 14 officers working directly with neighborhood groups, downtown businesses, 24 public schools, and two Level One Trauma Centers within the city. Joe also has extensive training in incident management, fire ground and hazardous material command, risk management, and Department of Justice training in response to weapons of mass destruction. Joe also enjoys teaching as a training instructor and faculty member at multiple colleges in Michigan, including Kellogg Community College and Washtenaw Community College.
Joe has trained well over 5,000 Law enforcement officers and is certified as an expert witness in several judicial systems. Joe authored the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards emergency/pursuit driving instructor manual, which is currently used in all police officer academy training in the State of Michigan. He has authored numerous policies and procedures for law enforcement, fire departments, medical authorities, and security departments in healthcare, schools, and corporate settings.
Armed with practical hands on experience in the areas of safety, security and training, Joe Humphries joined Compliance One Group, a code compliance firm located in Kalamazoo, MI, to lead the firm’s preparedness and safety training division in 2014. In his first position as Project Manager, Joe performed on-site security assessments within facilities to identify areas of risk and vulnerability, and then worked with the facilities’ management to provide viable solutions and programs to mitigate risks. In working closely with his clients, Joe developed an array of industry best practices as a direct reflection of his law enforcement experience.
Joe’s applied knowledge was earned by devoting 25 years to his communities as a police officer, firefighter, medical first responder, and K-9 handler/trainer. As such, he and his team’s adapted approaches to training reflects the “reality based scenario” elements that proves most effective and proactive by placing employees into real life scenarios to draw from past experiences in order to survive catastrophic events, should they arise. His team has designed and implemented daily and annual training programs for police, fire, medical, and security personnel throughout.

Safety & Security Expert
Steve has over 25 years of experience and expertise in law enforcement, and has an innate ability to both plan and be directly involved in the execution and resolution of several high-level criminal cases.
As a detective with a sheriff’s station responsible for over 135,000 people, Steve has been the lead in creating solutions and new initiatives to investigate major crimes. He is a coordinator of a Major Crimes Task Force that coordinates investigations with Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the U.S. Secret Service. Steve has participated on state committees that have built police operations guidelines state-wide and has designed an investigative apprehension and surveillance training program for the Michigan Department of Corrections Absconder Recovery Unit that is used by all members within the State of Michigan.
Steve has also been the lead training and consultant for approximately 4,000 people in Active Shooter Response for public and private schools, large medical facilities, places of worship, and governmental agencies. He has also helped design Active Shooter Response Procedures, Active Shooter Safe Rooms, Emergency Operations Plans, and Evacuations and Reunifications Procedures. Steve has also consulted on and completed numerous building security assessments that have included, but are not limited to, security cameras, employees’ personal safety, and overall building safety operations.
He has been an instructor at several colleges, for both new and seasoned law enforcement officers, for 19 years. His instructional areas of expertise include: law scenario-based conflict resolution; street-level tactical operations; alcohol-based investigations; courtroom testimony; and specialized interviewing.

Eric Kella is the vice president of Compliance One Group, a healthcare code compliance firm located in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He is a graduate of Western Michigan University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in construction engineering.
Eric has 12 years of construction experience in healthcare facilities with an emphasis specific to healthcare facility code compliance. His construction experience is in renovation projects within existing operational healthcare facilities where knowledge of infection control and necessary clinical controls, interim life safety measures, hospital utility systems, and communication is key to maintain day-to-day operations with little to no impact to patients and staff. He has vast knowledge in the project closeout and occupancy process with the Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), from local building inspectors to the Bureau of Fire Services and Health Facilities Engineering Section.
Eric’s healthcare facility code compliance experience includes maintaining compliance with all authorities have jurisdiction. He has developed immense knowledge of NFPA 101 and NFPA 99, and has developed knowledge within the accrediting agencies: The Joint Commission, DNV, HFAP, AAAHC and CMS.
Eric has also developed and currently oversees compliance programs for emergency preparedness, life safety mock surveys, barrier management, and testing, inspection and maintenance for Compliance One Group.
Life Safety Advisor
Brad is a former advisor to Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP) and former Joint Commission LS surveyor. He guides clients through organizational assessment; management training; ongoing coaching of task groups; and extensive one-on-one coaching of facility leaders. His clients have included insurance underwriter groups, hospitals, ambulatory care centers, physician practice groups, and large integrated systems across the country. He analyzes and develops leadership effectiveness and efficiency in work processes, focusing on assessing an organization’s preparedness for survey, evaluating processes in achieving preparedness, and guiding organizations toward compliance.
As a presenter at national seminars, regional conferences, and audio conferences, Brad teaches the Keyes Life Safety Boot Camp series to various groups and organizations. He is the author or coauthor of many HCPro books, including the best-selling Analyzing the Hospital Life Safety Survey, now in its 3rd edition.
Brad has also authored a variety of articles in numerous publications addressing features of life safety and fire protection, as well as white papers and articles on the Building Maintenance Program. Currently serving as the contributing editor of the monthly HCPro newsletter Healthcare Life Safety Compliance gives Brad further insight to the industry’s trends and best practices.
Having worked as a consultant to the healthcare industry for more than 10 years, and in the facilities management side of healthcare for more than 30 years, Brad was most recently employed as safety officer at a large Midwest hospital. Serving as one of the original Life Safety Code® specialist surveyors for The Joint Commission, Brad has more than three years of experience in hospital accreditation surveys. He currently is certified as a Healthcare Safety Professional by the Board of Certified Healthcare Safety Management.
